Instagram has been around long, since the launch of dark mode in Android 9 Pie, the feature has been slowly gaining a lot of popularity. But in Android 9 Pie, the dark theme was not for any apps, and it was just applicable to the operating system.
But with the launch of Android 10, Google has brought the feature system-wide, and most of Google’s applications now support Dark mode. Many third-party developers like Facebook has brought this feature to their platform also. Facebook-owned Instagram also received this feature recently.
Running Instagram on Dark mode can help conserve power, it’s easier on eyes at night time, the contrast can make it easier to read the text and also looks very cool when using on AMOLED or OLED screens.
Since the launch of the feature, developers have been scrambling to update their apps with this feature. While Instagram has got the Dark mode but enabling the feature is not as easy as flicking a switch. If you want this feature, then you need to have Android 10 or iOS 13 in your smartphone to enjoy the dark tones.
Currently, the Instagram app doesn’t have many options in settings to enable the dark theme, but we wish that the future updates may resolve this. The dark mode will be automatically activated when you enable the device’s system-wide dark theme from system settings.
The option to enable dark mode from settings will arrive in the near future, and we’ll update this guide when it happens, but till then, here is how you can enable it on your smartphone right now.

- Open phones’ setting
- Tap on ‘Display and Brightness’
- Toggle and activate ‘Dark Theme’ option

The dark mode is enabled in Android 10 and iOS 13, but there is a way that Android 9 Pie users can also activate in their Instagram app. In Android 9 Pie, it can be enabled by turning on the battery saver in your Android phone, and Instagram will be automatically turned to the Dark theme.
If you want, there are modded versions of Instagram app out there that come pre-enabled with the dark theme as default. But as the name says, they are modded and cannot be said as secure as the official app. So, we suggest you should not touch the app even with a 10 feet pole.
