No, it’s not a 10,000 mAh battery, but it’s the display!

Our smartphone screens are getting better and bigger day by day, and every phone manufacturer is trying to make long-lasting battery. But there is a Chinese company that thinks the opposite as they have introduced a phone that shows only black and white color.

Hisense is a China-based consumer electronics company, and you may have heard about them as they are prevalent in the Television industry. The company has introduced its smartphone A5 this month in China.

Believe me when I tell you that you’ve never seen a smartphone like this before. What makes it so unique is that the phone doesn’t have a color display; instead, they have opted for a monochrome e-link display, which we see in Amazon Kindle devices. The screen is high definition and has a resolution of 640 x 720 pixels.

This move of ditching an LCD or OLED display may be totally flop, but it has given the phone some advantage. As the monochrome display uses less power, the phone can ten days on a single charge, yes 10 days! It features a 4,000 mAh battery but supports only 5V/1.2 A decade-old charging technology.

More on paper specification says it has a Snapdragon 439 processor, 13MP rear camera, 5 MP selfie camera, a headphone jack, and whopping support of 256 GB expandable storage. This may be the cheapest phone you can get for 256GB storage capacity.

The device runs on Android 9 Pie out of the box but sadly comes without any Play Store support. If you want to install any apps, you have first to copy them on your phone storage and then install them from there. The phone supports OTG function and Bluetooth.

It has every feature that you would expect from a smartphone in 2020. But despite that also the phone is almost useless to most phone users out there. You don’t need a tech expert to guess the reason. The screen, yes, it has the display of a Kindle device, which is only useful if you want to read something other than that it is useless.

Technically the phone can play videos, but the screen refresh rate is so low that it can’t play any video. So you might as well forget about recording any video with the device. It almost makes you feel like you are in 1980 when you are holding that phone but a long-lasting battery does sound good.

To be honest, the phone is only suitable for two, which is reading and music. Other than this, the phone is completely useless. If you really want something to read from, I would suggest you go with a Kindle paperwhite. It would cheaper than this and offer you more features to play with.

Is the phone any good?

For all its features, that phone does make a good e-book reader with long-lasting battery life. But honestly, you can do all that and more on your $200 Xiaomi phone also. I get that the battery won’t last that much longer but you’ll be able to do a lot more with Xiaomi than you can on the A5.

The Hisense A5 is available to buy from AliExpress for a price tag of $169 for a 4GB/32GB version. There is also a 4GB/64GB version that costs $212.
